Rock Paper Scissors Strategy Guide

Pure luck against a computer, but humans give themselves away. Here is what actually helps.

Choosing at random is the one strategy that can never be beaten.

The short answer

If your opponent plays truly at random, nothing you do changes your results. You will win, lose and draw about a third of the time each. A strategy only helps against opponents who are predictable, and most people are, at least a little.

Why random play can't be beaten

Rock paper scissors is a perfectly balanced game. Each choice beats one other and loses to one other. If you pick each option with equal chance, no opponent can find a pattern to exploit, whatever they do. This is what game theory calls the equilibrium strategy: choose rock, paper and scissors one third of the time each, unpredictably.

That is exactly what our computer opponent does, which is why you can't beat it in the long run.

How people give themselves away

Humans are bad at being random. Research on people playing repeated rounds has found some tendencies, although they vary between individuals and groups:

None of these is a guarantee. They are small edges that work best over many rounds against the same person.

Practical tips for a quick game

  1. Watch before you play. In a group, notice what others open with.
  2. Don't repeat your own pattern. If you notice yourself throwing the same sequence, change it up.
  3. Think one step ahead, not three. If you expect them to switch after losing, play what beats their likely new move. Don't overthink it, because they may be thinking the same.
  4. Let a tool choose for you. If you want to be unpredictable, throw at random. A random pick is the one strategy that can never be countered.

Best of three, best of five

Longer series reduce luck a little but never remove it. In a best-of-three between two equal random players, each has a 50% chance of winning the series. Only a pattern in the other player's moves can tilt that.

When you just need a decision

If you only want a fair answer, skip the game and flip. A coin toss settles it in one go, and a best of 3 coin flip gives you the same drama as a short rock paper scissors match.
